The Battle of Dien Bien Phu was the decisive battle of the French Indochina War. The outcome of the battle ended French colonial rule in Asia and ushered in America’s later military involvement in the region. Many misconceptions that the French had about their enemy, the Vietnamese, led to the crushing defeat at Dien Bien Phu, and these misconceptions plagued the Americans during their military involvement. Unfortunately, the Battle of Dien Bien Phu has become one of the least studied battles in history, and many people do not even know about it.
