For anyone wondering, the sock tied around my guitar is being used as a fret wrap. Since there’s a lot of tapping onto open strings there would be a bunch of loud overtones getting picked up by the mic from the strings vibrating behind where they are tapped. The sock (fret wrap) slightly mutes the open notes and prevents that issue. The guitar is tuned to D standard, one whole step below standard tuning.
