New 20mph Zones Don’t Make Drivers Slow Down, Transport Secretary Admits

New 20mph zones do not make drivers slow down, Transport Secretary Mark Harper has admitted, as drivers staged a go-slow motorway protest against the new Welsh speed limit. The protest, which took place on the M4 between Newport and Swansea, saw drivers drive at 30mph in protest of the new 20mph limit. Harper said that he understood why drivers were frustrated, but that he was committed to making roads safer. “I understand why drivers are frustrated with 20mph zones,“ he said. “But the evidence is clear that they do save lives.“ “We need to make our roads safer for everyone, and that includes reducing the speed limit in certain areas.“ However, Harper’s admission that 20mph zones do not make drivers slow down is likely to fuel calls for the government to scrap the new limits. The go-slow protest on the M4 was organized by the Fair Speed campaign group, which argues that 20mph zones are unnecessary and counterproductive. “2
