[COLOS-seum] ⚔️ ⚡🇮🇹 🏛️ ⚔️ ⚡🇮🇹 🏛️ ⚔️ ⚡ The most interesting fact I descovered during my visit was the origin of the name Colosseum. And it’s not easy at all to explain. So, there was a crazy Emperor Nero 👑 He was tricked into suiside ☠️ (oh, these Romans…), and his villa was replaced with a huge amphitheater 🏛️ (because, well, why not?). But Nero erected (I do love this word) a massive bronze statue 🗽 in his villa. So, the statue was moved next to the new amphitheater (again, why not??). It turned out every huge statue the Romans called… yep, Colossus. Hence the name of the amphitheater 😉 Also was funny to know that the passages through which big crowds could exit rapidly at the end of an event were called vomitoriums 🤢 They kinda vomited the people… 🤮 It also turned out that the arena of the Colosseum was covered with sand… And guess what they call sand in Spanish? Yep, it’s “arena“ ⛱️ Finally, as a Harry Potter ⚡ fan, I was excited to learn that the retired gladiators would receive the wooden sword ⚔️ they used for training.
