Arms Control Is Dead. And So Might We Be | Prof. Tom Sauer & Prof. Heinz Gärtner

[Interview Part 1 of 2] Strategic Arms Control has all but collapsed and even nuclear nonproliferation is at the verge of disappearing. Iran and some other states might soon get the bomb. The world is re-arming worse than in the Cold War. All of this should worry us big time since we are also walking straight into a multi-polar world with little rules and norms to restrain states from using ultimate force against each other. Tom Sauer is Professor in International Politics at the University of Antwerpen, in Belgium. He is a specialist in Security Studies, especially in nuclear arms control, proliferation, and disarmament. His latest co-edited book is titled Alliances in Asia and Europe: The Evolving Indo-Pacific Strategic Context and Inter-regional Alignments (Routledge, 2023). Heinz Gärtner is a university professor and lecturer in the Department of Political Science at the University of Vienna. He is also a board member of the International Institute for Peace. In 2022 he co-edited with me “Neutral Beyond the Cold: Neutral States and the Post Cold War International System”
