John and Daryl were working in John’s apartment, looking for inspiration for their next LP tentatively titled “H2O“ when Daryl remembered a partial melody set to a reggae beat he started on but never finished. They changed the beat and wrote some lyrics and “Maneater“ was born. Lamont Dozier, of Holland-Dozier-Holland writer of Motown fame thought that the duo had done a cover of the Supremes “You Can’t Hurry Love“ when he heard the opening bass line on the radio. The result was a smash hit, spending four weeks at #1 at the end of 1982 and into 1983. During the recording sessions for “H2O“, the dynamic duo had the MTV documentary film crew in the studio to preserve the process. It was a wise move as the video clip introduced them and the music
