John and Daryl were working in John’s apartment, looking for inspiration for their next LP tentatively titled “H2O“ when Daryl remembered a partial melody set to a reggae beat he started on but never finished. They changed the beat and wrote some lyrics and “Maneater“ was born. Lamont Dozier, of Holland-Dozier-Holland writer of Motown fame thought that the duo had done a cover of the Supremes “You Can’t Hurry Love“ when he heard the opening bass line on the radio. The result was a smash hit, spending four weeks at #1 at the end of 1982 and into 1983.
