All Through The Town (1927)

Item title reads: “All through the town. Advent of Lent celebrated with Centuries-old Shrovetide Football Game. “ Alnwick, Northumberland A piper leads a band of men across a courtyard, and they are handed a football. We see a man surrounded by a crowd of all ages as he evidently points to the start of the game and kicks the ball forward. It looks like a free for all, as a mass of men in winter coats and ordinary clothes kick the ball and mill about near a set of rugby style goal posts decorated with greenery. The crowd are then seen watching two men swimming across some water, with the ball, trying to reach the far bank. Note: This tradition certainly looks crazy, the water looks freezing cold.
