It is the 28th largest city in Germany and the fourth largest city in the former East Germany after East Berlin, Leipzig and Dresden. it became the engine of the German Industrial Revolution. Its economic strength earned Chemnitz the nickname “Saxon Manchester“. A large number of looms, steam engines and locomotives were produced here and sold all over the world. During the air raids at the end of the Second World War, almost the entire city centre was reduced to rubble. Out of this ruin a new city was born, initially characterised by a socialist style, but later influenced by German and foreign architectural firms that gave Chemnitz a new face. This development continues today, although areas like Kassberg - with the largest concentration of Green and Art Nouveau buildings in Europe - are still proud of the city’s past. Chemnitz is like a melting pot, combining the industrial era, East German concrete slab buildings and the business-like purity of glass concrete modernism.
