Being a Dumb Tourist On The Lifesteal SMP

I GOT ADDED TO THE LIFESTEAL SMP, which is a Minecraft server where if somebody kills you, they steal one of your hearts from your hotbar. There is just one problem: I’VE NEVER KILLED ANYBODY EVER IN MINECRAFT! I don’t know how the PvP system works, so how am I supposed to survive during my first day!?
