Explanation of Zira’s backstory: (SPOILER ALERT, don’t read any further if you haven’t watched the video yet!!!) So what I’m trying to show here is that Zira used to live in the Pridelands when she was a cub. But she and her mother weren’t part of the pride, they were rogue lions. And when Uru’s brother Inyanga had all other predators, including rogue lions, chased away from the Pridelands, Zira’s mother abandoned her in fear of the hyenas. So since then, Zira was on her own. One plotpoint that I wanted to include is that Zira did not join Mufasa’s pride out of the kindness of her heart, but because she meant to take revenge on the ruler of the Pridelands and become queen herself. But then she fell in love with Scar and decided they could just do it together. Yeah, I had written that scene, but the whole thing was long enough as it was so I didn’t edit it. But here’s that part from the script: (Later, Scar and Zira alone. Zira: “So, this is the chance you’ve been waiting for.“ Scar: “I know. I have dreamt of following in my mother’s pawprints for so long.“ Zira: “I’m so happy for you. You can count on me.“ Scar: “Zira… If we are really going to do this, we need to be honest with each other. No secrets of any way can stand between us. We are committing high treason, we must trust each other.“ Zira looks at Scar knowingly. Scar: “You didn’t come here for the hunting grounds. You could have gone anywhere else, some place where you don’t have to share with another pride. What did you want here?“ Zira: “You know me well.“ She collects herself for a moment. “My mother and I lived in the Pridelands when I was small… under king Inyanga.“ Scar’s eyes widen. Zira: “And one day he just decided that rogue lions like us weren’t allowed in the Pridelands anymore. They showed up all of a sudden, he and his loyal hyenas. And my mother? She ran for it! Apparently too scared to think of me, of taking me with her, that I couldn’t run so fast. I called for her, called my lungs out until my throat was sore. Of course my pathetic mewling just sent them my way. So I ran, as fast as my clumsy little paws would carry me. They almost had me when I slipped and rolled off a cliff. I don’t even know if the piece missing from my ear happened before or after that. But as it seemed, these hyenas just assumed me dead and weren’t as interested in prey that doesn’t squeal anymore. I somehow survived on my own. Hunting bigger prey as I grew. But I knew that one day I would return and take away everything from those who took my childhood from me! So when we came here, I planned to wipe out everybody in my way! The king. His queen. His cubs if he has any. And his brother. But then I saw you and… I cannot explain it but, I liked you. And a different plan started to form in my mind. That maybe you could be the way to my goal. That maybe, I could live with ruling by your side…“ Scar: “I had a feeling you had plans of your own.“ He leans over and cuddles her or something. “We will take what should be our’s.
