Global National: July 15, 2024 | Trump formally secures GOP nomination at RNC
On tonight’s top story: Two days after the attempt on former U.S. president Donald Trump’s life, he has cemented his spot at the head of the Republican Party. After being formally nominated as the party’s choice for presidential candidate at the Republican National Convention (RNC), Trump chose Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance as his running mate. Plus, Trump has scored a major legal victory after a judge dismissed the Department of Justice’s case against him for the mishandling of classified documents. Jackson Proskow reports.
Meanwhile, U.S. authorities say it will be difficult to ascertain a motive for the assassination attempt on Trump. The gunman was killed by snipers shortly after he fired several shots. And as Jeff Semple reports, there are still questions about how the 20-year-old suspect got so close to the former president.
After the attempt on Trump’s life, Canada’s Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc says he’s been briefed by security and intelligence officials. LeBlanc says he’s been assured they are exercising “increased vigilance” and that he’s in close contact with his American counterparts. But as Mackenzie Gray reports, there is a new warning tonight about a torrent of online hate targeting politicians – and the need for tougher enforcement to protect them.
Plus, Canada’s premiers are in Halifax for this year’s Council of the Federation. The gathering often highlights the rocky relationship between provinces and territories and the federal government. But there are other interests too – as Indigenous and health-care leaders are also hoping to be heard. Heidi Petracek explains.
The U.S. and Canada are preparing to host the World Cup in 2026. But after the mayhem at Sunday’s Copa America finals in Miami, there are concerns North America may not be ready. Hundreds forced their way into the stadium, overpowering police and security personnel. And as Mike Armstrong reports, critics say that kind of chaos should serve as a warning.
And finally, you won’t see many new sports arenas across Paris for the Olympic Games. The city has built only two new permanent venues, as part of a more sustainable ethos for the massive event. As Redmond Shannon reports.
