The opera is about the love story between Yang Guifei and Emperor Xuanzong of Tang; to be exact, the scene is, one day Yang invited the Emperor to her garden, but he was late, so she was upset and get drunk in the garden while enjoying the view of beautiful moon-night. Yang was known as one of the Four Beauties of ancient China. She was the beloved consort of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang during his later years. Thanks to the big amount of Tang poems that have been around ever since, many details of their love story, together with the officially recorded history, was known by everyone till today. One of the most famous Tang poems was “Song of Everlasting Regret“. You can check the detailed translation of this long poem at this address: Basically, the Emperor loved Yang so much that he ignored ruling the country as a proper King. During the An Lushan Rebellion, the army couldn’t defend the capital city of the dynasty, so the Emperor and Yang has to run for their lives. As they were fleeing from the capital Chang’an to Chengdu, the emperor’s guards demanded that he put Yang to death because they blamed the rebellion on her cousin Yang Guozhong and the rest of her family, which was given high positions in the government because of Yang. The Emperor capitulated and reluctantly ordered his attendant Gao Lishi to strangle Yang to death. The Emperor returned to the Palace after the An Lushan Rebellion had been pacified, and sent men to look for Yang’s body, but they could not find it. And the Emperor lived in lonely and sadness ever since. The last four lines of the poem tells the everlasting sorrow of this tragedy: “In the heavens, we vow to be as two birds flying wingtip to wingtip, On earth, we vow to be as two intertwined branches of a tree.“ Even the heaven and earth have their ending times, The regret of our parting will last forever and never end. The song, originally sung by Mr. Li Yugang, tells the story in a much modern point of view. I did a rough translation of the lyrics, hope it will help you understand it more. According to the legend, it is a royal pool only for the Emperor, yet the Emperor loves Yang so much that he bestowed upon her the honor of bathing with him at the Huaqing pools. (2) Kingfisher hair ornament, gold sparrow hairpin and jade hair clasp: According to the poem, these are among the large amount of luxurious gifts the Emperor gave Yang. (3) The Song of rainbow skirts and feather robes: It is a song written by the Emperor Xuanzong, a masterpiece in the music Tang Dynasty. Legend has it was inspired by goddesses on heaven in his dream. Sadly, the song was lost during An Lushan Rebellion. (4)The Gate of the Sword: It is a “gate of mountain“, located on the way to Chengdu, where the Emperor fled to during the rebellion. (5)Mawei Slope: The location of Yang’s death.
