“THE SILENT SERVICE“ EPISODE “THE GRAYLING STORY“ USS GRAYLING SS-209 65734

Dating to season 2 in 1958, this episode of “The Silent Service“ is entitled “The Grayling Story.“ It was directed by Sobey Martin and written by Jay Rosenburg, and features Rear Admiral Thomas M. Dykers as the host. The plot of this episode surrounds the USS Grayling’s fourth patrol, in which the sub encountered a Japanese Q-ship -- a decoy vessel used to draw in submarines. The sub ends up under heavy attack and it looks like curtains for the boat and its crew. The “Grayling“ would escape but then be lost with all hands in Sept 1943 during its eighth patrol near the Philippines. The Grayling would sink 5 ships totalling 20,000 plus tons before her loss. The cast includes Barry Atwater, Tommy Cook, Arvid Nelson and Dan Barton. USS Grayling (SS-209) was a Tambor-class submarine. Motion picture films don’t last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we’ve worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you’d like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we’d love to hear from you.
