Ukraine: Airline launches sightseeing flight over Chernobyl nuclear disaster zone

Ukraine International Airlines launched a sightseeing flight over the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone on Sunday on the eve of the 35th anniversary of the world’s worst nuclear disaster. According to the press service of the airline, during the sightseeing flight, the passengers saw the Chernobyl nuclear power plant from a height of 900 meters and the abandoned city of Pripyat. The passengers also heard about the causes and consequences of the accident. A series of explosions and subsequent fire at Chernobyl’s number four reactor on April 26, 1986, released radioactive fallout which also spread to neighbouring countries. More than eight million people were exposed to elevated levels of radiation as a result of the disaster. To date, Chernobyl is still considered to be the worst civic nuclear accident in human history.
