When K-pop girl group aespa debuted in 2020, the whole world was watching: Not only were they fierce performers in their own right, but they also had AI avatars, opening up a vast and promising digital future for the group. (Their name is derived from the words “avatar,” “experience,” and “aspect.”) But in the years since, aespa (members Giselle, Karina, Winter, and Ningning) has only seemed that much more real, with their hugely successful 2020 single “Black Mamba” and their 2021 debut mini-LP ’Savage’ landing them on Coachella’s mainstage earlier this year.
“We have challenged ourselves with new genres of music,” Karina tells Apple Music of their forthcoming release ’Girls - The 2nd Mini Album,’ out July 8. “We pay special attention to the vocal details to fit many different genres.” Explore aespa’s metaverse by pre-adding ’Girls’ (which includes lead single “Illusion,” the summertime ’90s-girl-group throwback “Life’s Too Short,” and the Wild West trap production of “Lingo”), watching their Up Next short film, and checking out their exclusive interview with Apple Music’s Brooke Reese.
