Most people coming to this great country come for the right reason: to seek a better life for them and their families. Yet there’s a small group of people coming here because they’re running away from the crimes they committed abroad, or are coming here to create new victims and drive up crime in our city. I don’t have words for what these courageous kids had to endure: heinous acts no child should ever be subjected to. But I do have some words for those committing violent crime in our city: no matter what your status is, whether you’re a migrant, asylum seeker, resident, or citizen, if you break the law you have one label—criminal. If you break the law, the finest police officers and the greatest detectives in the world—the NYPD—will catch you and put you where you belong, and that’s behind bars.
