Taking as its point of departure a Quranic injunction that nations and tribes are meant to know one another, this epic event brings together several musical traditions in deeply meaningful dialogue. From Gregorian chant to Andalusian mawwals, from Middle Eastern melodic modes and rhythms to the euphoria of qawwali music and the poignant sound of the Chinese erhu, each shares its stories in a distinct musical language. Lyrics are drawn from beloved luminary figures and mystical poets – Hildegard of Bingen, Abu al-Hasan al-Shushtari, Mansur al-Hallaj, Yunus Emre, Rumi, Imadeddin Nasimi, Amir Khusro, and Bulleh Shah. The entire concert is performed by master musicians on traditional instruments – rabab, tar, santur, qanun, ney, erhu, tanbur, kemanche, balaban, oud, sitar, tabla, dholak, and daf. – Sami Yusuf performed ‘Beyond the Stars’ on two nights in Al Wasl Plaza at the Dubai EXPO. This YouTube release is a compilation of the two performances, mixed and mastered for optimal quality.
