N. Korea “successfully tests“ new type of high-thrust solid-fuel engines for IRBMs

北 “신형 중거리탄도미사일용 고체연료엔진 시험 두차례 만족스러운 결과“ North Korea says it has successfully tested new solid-fueled engines for a new type of intermediate-range ballistic missile, which could signify another missile test in the near future. North Korean affairs correspondent Kim Jung-sil explains. North Korea’s state-run KCNA reported on Wednesday that the North had successfully conducted hot-fire tests of “new types of high-thrust, solid-propellent engines“ for intermediate-range ballistic missiles. It said the first-stage engine’s hot-fire test was conducted on November 11th, and the second-stage tested on November 14th. Until now North Korean IRBM technology was based on using liquid propellants. Military experts say solid-fueled missiles, though, allow greater maneuverability and stealth before launch, which is why experts warn that it will be harder to detect and prepare for an attack by missiles that use this type of propellant. “I have to say that solid propellant got a very good response so it will not take a lot of time to prepare for the attack./ It will take less than five minutes compared to a liquid rocket. / That’s going to be a problem as it means that we cannot have enough time to be able to prepare for any attack from North Korea.“ The KCNA also added that the tests provided a guarantee for reliably accelerating the development of the new-type IRBM system. North Korea’s General Missile Bureau put great significance on the new IRBM, saying the recent tests were a necessary process to enhance the strategic offensive capabilities of the North Korean military in the “grave and unstable security environment,“ and against the vicious military collusion by its enemies. Professor Chang added that the South Korean military would be well aware of this situation, and would be looking for a solution. Other experts also said that to detect missiles in advance, space assets such as satellites, are necessary which are extremely costly, and perhaps even they might not be enough.
