The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency announced on Thursday that its probe named “Smart Lander for Investigating Moon“ will begin its 20-minute descent to the moon from midnight on Saturday. This lunar mission comes after two previous moon landing attempts failed ---one public and one private-led. The probe will be using “pinpoint“ technology to land within 100 meters of its target on the lunar surface, a technology that allows spacecraft to land at precise locations. If successful, Japan will become the fifth country, after the United States, the Soviet Union, China, and India to land a spacecraft on the moon.
