Over the last decade, Africa has been no stranger to coups, especially in the western part of the continent. But what does this mean for the continent? Are these coups a good or bad thing? In this video, we’ll explore the coups and coup attempts that have taken place in Africa since 2020, delving into the fascinating stories and concerning questions surrounding them. Did you know that out of the 494 coups attempted or accomplished worldwide since 1950, Africa has seen the highest number at 222, with 109 of them being successful? Recently, there has been a noticeable increase in coups across Africa, with military leaders seizing control in several countries such as Gabon, Burkina Faso, The Republic of Guinea, Niger, Sudan, Chad, and Mali. What’s particularly noteworthy is that 21 out of the 27 coups in sub-Saharan Africa since 1990 have taken place in former French colonies, resulting in 16 successful coups within these colonies.
