The GIGN (French: Groupe d’intervention de la Gendarmerie nationale pronunciation (help·info); transl. “National Gendarmerie Intervention Group“) is the elite tactical unit of the National Gendarmerie of France. Among its missions are counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, surveillance of national threats, protection of government officials, and targeting organized crime.[5] It was established in 1973, shortly after the 1972 Munich massacre saw the killing of 13 Israeli athletes by Palestinian insurgents in Munich, Germany. The GIGN was initially created as a relatively small tactical unit specialized in sensitive hostage situations, but has since grown into a larger force with expanded responsibilities and capabilities.
