Trapped: Mental Illness in America’s Prisons 3:00 “The withdrawal of mental health funding has turned prisons into default mental health facilities. The system designed for security is now trapped with treating mental illness and the mentally ill are trapped inside the system with nowhere else to go. This film ventures inside the Correctional Psychiatric Treatment Unit of the Kentucky State Reformatory to see how the state is meeting the needs of this growing population.“ When photographer Jenn Ackerman spent her first day at the Kentucky State Reformatory for what would become the series “Trapped,” she knew she had no choice but to photograph the images in black-and-white. “When I went on the tour (of the prison), I didn’t see it in color; when I came back, I was trying to remember what it looked like, and I couldn’t remember any of the colors at all.
