S. KOREA BEGINS TWO-YEAR TERM AS UNSC MEMBER

한국 유엔 안보리 이사국 활동 개시 Hope your workweek is off to a good start. You’re watching Issues and Insiders. I’m Min Sunhee. Today we explore South Korea’s potential contributions to the U.N. Security Council as it undertakes a two-year term as a non-permanent member of the Council this year. For this I have Professor Lim Eun-jung from Kongju National University. Professor Lim it’s been a while since we’ve had you here in the studio. Welcome back. I also have Professor Ban Kil Joo at Korea University live on the line. Professor Ban it’s good to have you with us. 1) Professor Lim, let’s begin with some background information about the United Nations Security Council including its foundation and purpose. 2) Professor Ban, Korea begins its two-year term as a non-permanent member of UNSC this year. What issues does Korea look to take to the table? 3-1) Professor Lim, with regard to North Korea-related matters, do you expect to see some progress at the UNSC amid South Korea’s presence? 4) Professor Ban, there have been rampant calls over the years for broad reform of the UNSC given its failings to address global challenges. What are your thoughts? And what do you suggest to render the UNSC more relevant? 5) And Professor Lim, how do you respond to calls for reform at the UNSC, and what are your proposals with regard to reforming this entity? 6) Meanwhile, Professor Ban, despite the lack of consensus at the UNSC, some say its presence is essential as it offers countries, even feuding countries, a platform for some form of interaction. Do you agree? 7) Professor Lim, what can South Korea do to perhaps strengthen the role of the UNSC in tackling global matters? 8) Professor Ban, pundits claim South Korea’s latest term at the UNSC will provide the Yoon administration with an opportunity to prove its standing as a global pivotal state. What do you say? 9) Professor Lim, beyond the UNSC and North Korea, what are some pending tasks for the Yoon administration on the diplomatic front this year? 10) And Professor Ban, what diplomatic agenda do you believe the South Korean government needs to address this year?
