Chemnitz / Germany is the 3rd largest city in Saxony, eastern Germany, with the former name name of “Karl-Marx-Stadt“ during East-German times. Its huge Karl Marx Monument commemorates the socialist philosopher. Chemnitz was an industrial center for textile production. The textile industry and much of the city was destroyed in March 1945 during thhe 2nd World war. The rebuilt city center consists of socialist modernist and blocky architecture. In 2025 Chemnitz will be European Capital of Culture. We start our walking tour at the “Nischel“ which the Karl Marx monument is called by locals - mostly meaning something like (thick/dumb) “head“ in local slang. This head is 7,10m tall and weighs around 40 tonnes.
