China condemns all attacks on civilians as nations, protesters take sides on Israel-Palestine issue

The United Nations Security Council has met behind closed doors in an emergency session amid the war between Israel and Gaza but failed to achieve the unanimity needed for a joint statement.   At least 1,100 people have already been killed since Hamas, the Palestinian group that controls the blockaded Gaza Strip, launched an assault on Israeli towns on Saturday and took hundreds of people hostage.   Chinese ambassador to the UN, Zhangjun expressed condemnation at all attacks against civilians.   Deputy U.S. Ambassador to the UN Robert Wood reiterated US support to Israel but warned that the ongoing conflict could escalate.   Israel’s ambassador to the UN on Sunday slammed Hamas’ attack against Israel the previous day as a “barbaric pogrom“ Palestinian UN Ambassador Riyad Mansour told reporters before the closed-door meeting that Israel’s assault on Gaza will not accomplish its stated goals of destroying Hamas and ensuring its own security.   Meanwhile, dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered at Times Square in New York City on Sunday (October 8), expressing opposition to the US’ support of Israel. __________________ ShanghaiEye focuses on producing top-quality contents.
