Steve Smith “Choreography in Six“ - Soundcheck Warmup in 6/4

The Vital Information tune “Choreography in Six“ (from TIME FLIES) is in 6/4 and at most soundchecks I’ll think about one of the tunes we’ll play and try some different ideas and give the Front Of House mixer some realistic playing for microphone balances. You can’t see the mics clearly but in a club, like Catalina Bar and Grill in Hollywood, I’ll only use three overheads, a bass drum mic and a snare mic, which is mainly for brush playing. I’m balancing the instruments of the kit as I play, using my inner balance and playing the way I want the audience members sitting close to the stage to experience the actual sound of the kit. The sound you are hearing in the video is from the Overhead Zoom video plus the Zoom video in front of the kit. The drumset is my 1980 SONOR Oak Veneer kit with a 20“ BD, 8, 10, 12 rack tom, 14, 16 & 18 floor toms. The snares are two of my 14“x5.5“ Sonor Steel Signature Snares and a 12“x5“ Sonor snare. The main ride is a 22“ Zildjian Hi-Bell Dry, to my right is a 20“ K Mini-Bell and to my left is a 21“ Staccato Ride. The Hi-Hats are 15“ Avedis and the Gong is 34.“ I’m also using REMO heads, DW 5000 Double Pedal, my Signature Vic Firth sticks and Cympad Cymbal Optimizers. The video is mixed and edited by Christian Grassart. - Steve Smith
