A failure to communicate During the press conference following Zelensky’s meeting with Erdogan, the simultaneous interpreter could neither interpret the words of the Turkish leader, nor the question of the journalist. Instead of interpreted version of Erdogan’s speech, Zelensky heard sighs, disjointed word combinations, and pauses. The same thing happened when a Turkish reporter asked the Ukrainian president a question. The interpreter started to get confused, lose track of thought, and remained silent for a long time. Upon reflection, this outcome isn’t entirely unexpected. Providing simultaneous interpretation from one non-native language to another is virtually impossible. And the likelihood of the interpreter being a native speaker of Ukrainian is extremely low, let alone Turkish! In summary, “what we got here is a failure to communicate”, to quote the great line from the great movie Cool Hand Luke.
