It doesn’t quite work exactly like the word “more” or the word “so,” but it can still help you express your thoughts in a more advanced, nuanced manner when speaking, and that’s why I wanted to teach it to you in today’s video! I hope you find it helpful! 😊 As I explain in the video, “more so” means “to a greater extent or degree,” and we often use it in American English to replace adjectives that were already used in the sentence to avoid repeating them. When “more so” is used in this way, it’s common to add the word “even” before it to add an extra level of emphasis: The weather was absolutely freezing, and even more so at night. This place is very dangerous, and even more so for people like me who can’t defend themselves. I think Mom and Dad would be just as happy as they are now if they lived in a retirement home, maybe even more so. We can also put “more so” before nouns to say that something is true to a greater extent than something else: She is fond of all her students, but more so those who are eager to learn. I love going to baseball games, but that game was more so just an excuse to spend time with you. At the beginning of our day at the amusement park, our science teacher told us that she hoped we would learn something, but also that the day was more so just an opportunity to have fun. Also, keep in mind that native speakers have a tendency to use “more so” in sentences where “more” can be used instead. For example, “The day was more so about having fun than learning something.” In addition, native speakers sometimes write this phrase as one word (“moreso”), but this is not correct, and it should be written as two separate words.
