SATC | Season 4 | Episode 18 | Moon River
In this clip: Sarah Jessica Parker, Chris Noth and New York City.
Dedicatee: New York City
About this clip: This scene is the cornerstone of Carrie’s relationship with Big. While they are attracted to one another, they refuse to not be who they really are and what they stand for in the SATC narrative. Big is conscious that his decision to leave New York for Napa can be a telling blow to Carrie, who admits to her girlfriends that she is sadistic to herself when it comes to her trusting Big’s commitment which is oh-so-imminent but always falls short of materializing into reality.
It is significant to note that episode 11 in particular and the greater part Season 4 in general was in the making and aired after the horrendous 9/11 attacks on twin towers of New York. The loss of life and the melancholia that the tragedy engendered engulfs New York post 9/11 and is quite akin to Big’s departure leaving a big vacuum, effecting a sense of irreparable loss. Comparing Big to the Chrysler building, Carrie brings home the point that New York’s metal arteries are its spires and skyscrapers just as Carrie’s lifeblood is Big’s presence in her life as the strong, cold, rational, detached on-and-off partner. To pay homage to the importance of the lives of the victims and uphold the New York pride and dignity, the motif of the importance of New York gained prominence in the latter half of the season. The season ends with hopeful optimism even as the yellow leaves of maples and elms in Manhattan fall down and Carrie crosses the street ruminating mistakes that make us who we are and waxing eloquent on the inevitability of change.
Carrie and Big continue to be the most iconic and romantic couple of the past two decades on television, and I ♥ NY narrative commingles with it perfectly.
