Apocalypse in Switzerland! Hail the size of an orange fell on Zurich! Evacuation!

Thunderstorms brought heavy rain, wind and hail to parts of Switzerland, Western Switzerland, Basel and Ticino suffered the most. About 90 mm of rain fell in Locarno, Ticino, in 24 hours, according to SRF Meteo. Locarno usually receives 212 mm of precipitation for the entire month of August. In Western Switzerland, 57 mm fell in Vevey, Vaud and 56 mm in Schoe, a town in the nearby Valais. The city of Basel recorded a rainfall of 58 mm in 24 hours. Typical monthly rainfall in Basel in August is 88 mm. 58 mm is two-thirds of a typical August rain in one day. Storm damage caused the cancellation of trains in the Canton of Bern between Belp and Thun due to platform flooding. The hailstones, some of which are up to 11 cm wide, are the largest hailstones recorded in this region in the last two decades.
