Sydney’s New Year’s Eve fireworks dazzle in spectacular display

More than one million Sydney locals and tourists have celebrated New Year’s Eve in style, taking in the city’s world-renowned fireworks display from the harbour. There were 58,000 individual fireworks set off from the Harbour Bridge and Opera House, as well as city rooftops. The fireworks began at 9pm with the ’Calling Country’ display acknowledging Indigenous Australians. Some people got to the harbour as early as 5am on Sunday morning with the main vantage points filling up as early as midday due to being free this year rather than ticketed. There was a heavy police presence across the city, particularly as people left the area when the event finished and headed home.
