Farmers clash with riot police in Brussels during EU agriculture meeting

Furious farmers threw bottles at police in Brussels on Monday (February 26) as they protested against competition from cheap food imports, excessive environmental rules and subsidies favouring large firms. Demonstrations have been taking place for weeks in European countries including Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Italy and Greece, as farmers call for better income and less bureaucracy, complaining of unfair competition from cheap Ukrainian goods. The European Union in 2022 waived duties on Ukrainian food imports to support the country’s economy following Russia’s invasion. The protests come as the far right, for which farmers represent a growing constituency, is seen making gains in June’s European Parliament elections.
