Metallica - One (If It Was Mixed by Jason Newsted)

I have to say Cliff’s my favorite metal bass player of all time (Geddy Lee is up there as well, both share that spot) but this is my first song on Jason Newsted and I have to say that he’s got great taste and his lines are actually really cool! But you can tell there’s a huge difference in tone, first cause he plays with a pick, so the way he approaches the instrument is different (not worse or better) so you can tell how the instrument interacts with the guitars and the low spectrum as well. It dawns a new era in Metallica, and the bass role also changes. It goes from a more lead/shared limelight role to a more supporting type of role. The original mix is not good for us to analyze his work, but this one is pretty clear to me that Jason is a great bassist and deserves more credit. We have to remember that no one is or ever will be like Cliff, so no point in comparing styles and arrangements. Off to the song itself: This song is about a
