Lavrov on Finland, Sweden’s ascension into NATO; Scholz stresses no EU or NATO soldiers in Ukraine

Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov met with Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik on Friday in Antalya, Turkey. HE called ’a blatant self-exposure’ an audio recording published in Russian media by Margarita Simonyan, a Russian state TV journalist and the head of Russia Today. The audio reported to be a conference call of high-ranking German military officials talking about weapons for Ukraine sparked concerns of espionage in Germany and calls for clarification from Russia. Lavrov also commented on the prospect of military engagement with NATO after several prominent Western figures made comments regarding Ukraine and troop deployment. Additional weapons will be deployed in Russian regions to match the threats that ’may appear on the territory of Finland and Sweden’ following their accession into NATO, Lavrov said. A German defense ministry spokesperson said on Saturday that it couldn’t confirm the authenticity of the recording, but the Federal Office for Military Counterintelligence Service was investigating the matter and all necessary steps would be taken. German Chancellor Scholz on Saturday stressed that no NATO or European Union troops will be sent to fight in Ukraine.
