Fierce and Fearless: Alexandra Kiroi-Bogatyreva on Battling Corruption and Chasing Olympic Gold
In this compelling interview, Amanda Smorgon sits down with Alexandra Kiroi-Bogatyreva, an elite rhythmic gymnast who has earned a remarkable collection of accolades, including a gold, silver, and bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games, as well as multiple bronze medals at the Maccabiah Games. Alexandra is not only an Olympian, but she is also a dedicated law student at Monash University, pursuing a Bachelor of Laws with Honours.
A proud alumna of The King David School, Alexandra reflects on how the school supported her throughout her athletic career, enabling her to balance her rigorous training schedule with her studies. “Everything is possible if you have a goal and passion,” she shares, embodying the determination that has fueled her incredible journey.
The interview delves into Alexandra’s inspiring story of resilience during one of the most challenging periods of her life. After facing alleged corruption and match-fixing that prevented her from qualifying for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, Alexandra made the bold decision to move countries, continuing her fight to achieve her Olympic dreams. Living in a non-English speaking country, away from her family and support system, while studying law and training 10 hours a day, tested her in unimaginable ways. However, these hardships only strengthened her resolve. “2021 is a sensitive topic, but I’m open to discussing it because it was a pivotal moment in my life. It made me the athlete and person I am today,” she confides.
In addition to her athletic and academic pursuits, Alexandra is a passionate advocate for safeguarding in sport, actively involved in the Federation International Gymnastics Safeguarding Working Group. Her commitment to ensuring a safer environment for athletes is another testament to her leadership within and beyond the sport.
Alexandra also reflects on the profound role her Jewish identity has played in her life and career. She speaks with pride about her connection to the Jewish community and the values it instills. “Being part of the Jewish community allows all of us, and myself, to keep our traditional values, our love for Israel, and maintain a strong connection with our heritage and family,” she says. Competing at the Maccabiah Games was a defining moment for her, as it allowed her to celebrate her achievements surrounded by Jewish athletes who share the same values and sense of camaraderie.
A special thank you to Maccabi Victoria for arranging this insightful interview. Alexandra’s journey is one of resilience, passion, and an unyielding belief in the power of determination. Through her story, she inspires others to pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles they may face.
