It was premiered in Milan in May 1874, as a concert work, rather than a religious liturgy, in honour of Alessandro Manzoni; a poet whom Verdi admired greatly. Performed by the West German Radio Symphony Orchestra, with the Cologne, Turin and North German Radio Choruses.
