Baby, I came all across the ocean
I brought the sun from Nevada
I thought I’d give it to you
But baby, sometimes the world is a mystery
It feels like perfect harmony
And then you break it to me
I really don’t know how you can leave me now
I was in the middle of finishing high school
I was in the middle of eating my ice cream
This is so inappropriate, you’re so inappropriate
Baby, I came all across the ocean
I wrote a song in Kyoto
I thought I’d sing it to you
But baby, sometimes the world is a mystery
It feels like perfect harmony
And then you break it to me
I really don’t know how you can leave me now
I was in the middle of finishing high school
I was in the middle of eating my ice cream
This is so inappropriate, inappropriate
Music history is full of cheesy break-up songs. Hamburg-based, California-bred road-tripping duo River abandon the obvious choice of the usual main actors anger, despair, sorrow or regret for a cast that is way more entertaining. On their soaring first single “Inappropriate”, written in Sequoia National Park, California, they create the indie pop antithesis to all that break-up moaning. With tongue in cheek and sublimely radiating melodies, they wittily turn a broken heart into a chance of renewal. Pushed by powerful beats, retro synthies and euphoric arrangements, this is not only a soaring, cinematic first strike by indie pop’s latest discovery. It’s also a manifesto of not letting yourself get dragged down only because life doesn’t play by your rules. “This song is like traveling back in time to when we were still kids living each day to the fullest, not a care in the world. Not taking life and ourselves too seriously can be a lot harder than expected but with just the right bit of distance it’s a lot less drama than you think,” River say. Adding just the right dose of bittersweet longing into an otherwise cheerful indie romp, wanderlust duo River show their craftsmanship in musical contrasts already on their very first impression. Sit tight, this River has just left its source.
