THE CORROSIVE IMPACT OF ILLICIT FINANCE: A WAKE UP CALL FOR DEMOCRACY

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has shown the dangers unchecked kleptocracy poses to democracy. Kleptocrats and corrupt actors strategically use their vast resources to advance their interests both at home and abroad. Their tactics include the hidden movement of funds, but also the illicit practice of manipulating social and political contexts to gain footholds in democratic settings. Strong, transatlantic partnerships may be the first step to tackle this challenge around the world but they must be accompanied by a holistic response, including support for civil society, robust independent journalism, and protection for whistleblowers.
