Pentatonic scale- fiddle Improvisation

The pentatonic scale is a great starting point for improvisation on the fiddle. In this tutorial I briefly explain what a pentatonic scale is, and how to approach it on the violin. I then demonstrate how to improvise in jazz, blues and country. I give examples of pentatonic licks and patterns that work well on the fiddle and demonstrate how, particularly with jazz improvisation, the scale deals easily with a rapidly changing chord sequence. I discuss the relationship between major and minor pentatonic scales, and between pentatonic and blues scales. In the context of country fiddle, the pentatonic scale, combined with open string drones, gives a full and satisfying sound, while the ’fiddle capo“ method allows the rustic fiddle sound to easily come out even in the most difficult keys.
