Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s Influence on India

In the final episode of this series, Rajiv Malhotra and Dr. Jay Glaser discuss the influence that Maharishi had on Indians in India. Dr. Glaser talks about how the 1000 headed purusha program of Maharishi decided to go to India to teach TM and how this attracted tens of thousands of people. He talks about how he realised that though the Indians learnt TM loved it, and regularly did it, they were not actually meditating. He talks how he found when he traveled to that in India in the early 2000s after a gap of almost 20 years, that Ayurveda had morphed into a spa treatment available at hotels. He talks about the 2 levels of Ayurveda in India, the one in the villages which is timeless and continues to be so and the other the urban versions which are offshoots of Maharishi Ayurveda which was brought back to India by vaidyas who had gone westward to Maharishi’s facilities and then later returned. He comments about how Ayurveda has changed from being the poor man’s medical support system to a widely accepted system by the affluent and aspirational middle class too. It has now become a wellness paradigm for the middle class and elite. Dr. Glaser then talks about Maharishi’s closest aides, the pundits, the jyotishis, the musicians and vastu experts and how important they were to Maharishi.
