Even though the fighting in Europe was over, France’s overseas colony of Indochina was in revolt, and the ravaged nation desperately needed soldiers to stamp out the rebellion. Exhausted after years of war and occupation, they were forced to tap into a new pool of manpower, which came from an unlikely source.
