DIY Macrame/Weaving Tutorial - Rainbow Macraweave for Beginners! - Please see below for materials and written instructions. I have a fun rainbow macraweave design for you today. This is one of my favourite designs and I’m really excited to share it with you. A couple of notes before we get started - 1) a full list of the materials you’ll need for this project are listed in the description for you as well as written instructions for this tutorial. 2) I ended up painting my dowel to match the navy rope, feel free to do so as well or leave it as is. Okay let’s get started! Cut 20 pieces of 4mm navy rope, each piece is 5 ft long. Fold each piece in half and attach to your dowel using Lark’s Head Knots. Cut 3 pieces of 4mm navy rope, each piece is 2 ft long to use as your filler cords. We will tie 3 wavy rows of double half hitch knots (DHHKs) across our work. Start and end the first row about 3.5 inches down from the bottom of your dowel. Here is what it should look like once complete. Follow along as I show you how to tie the first row. Tie two more rows using the exact same process. Start and end the second row about 7.5 inches down from your dowel and the third row 11 inches down from your dowel. Cut off the extra rope from the sides of your work. If you’re worried about the double half hitch knots slipping off of your filler cord you can always add a dab of glue to the last knot on either side to secure it in place. We will fill in the 3 sections from bottom to top using roving and cotton frizz ribbons. The roving I stock in my shop is quite thick - we will use a piece of roving that is 4 feet long but only half the width (split your roving in half). Cut a 4 foot piece of roving in each of these colours: blue dusk, teal, paradise, mint, mustard, soft fruit/burgundy, caramel, and flamingo. Cut three 8-foot pieces of cotton frizz ribbon, one in the colour peach, one in the colour mint and one in the colour marine blue. We will use soumak weave to add both the roving and the cotton frizz ribbon to our work. Weave the material in front of 8 filler cords and then behind 4 filler cords. Add the blue dusk roving to your work first. When adding your cotton frizz skip the first two cords on the left and then use soumak weave as you did with the roving to weave the ribbon across your work. Here’s how I change directions to work my way back across my work. Add the teal roving to the left half of your work. Cut or rip the extra roving hanging from the back of your work and add that piece to the right side of your work. Add that piece to the bottom of the middle section. Add the paradise roving to your work as I do here. Pull the end through your work underneath the loop to give this row a bit of a different look. Cut or rip off a piece of mint roving that is 6 inches in length to add to the left side of your work. Skip the next 4 cords and then add the other piece of mint roving to fill in the remainder of this section. There should be a bit of extra roving - cut or rip that off to add to the bottom left of the middle section as I’ll do here. Add the mint cotton frizz ribbon next. Skip the first two cords on the left and then add the ribbon to your work just as you did to add the ribbon to the bottom section. Add the mustard roving to your work next. Add the caramel roving to the right side of your work. Cut or rip off the extra roving hanging from the back of your work and add that piece to the top section on the right side of your work. Add the soft fruit roving next. Add the flamingo roving to fill in the remainder of the middle section. Cut or rip off the extra roving hanging from the back of your work and add that piece to the top section on the left side of your work. Add the peach cotton frizz ribbon to the top section of your work as I’ll do here. To hide the ends of the cotton frizz ribbon, add a dab of glue to the back of the ribbon and then attach the end to it and cut off the excess. Cut the ends however long you’d like - I cut mine so that the fringe is approximately 1 foot long. Unravel the ends as you see fit. I hope you enjoyed this one.
