Musical fractal “Kuusi“ (“Soundflake“), instrumental version

A simplified version of Koch’s snowflake fractal is turned into music. The form of the fractal and the method how I turned the fractal into music should be well shown in the video. I composed this year 1991 when I was on a course on electronic music by Pauli Laine in Helsinki University, where the automatic methods to compose based on fractals were discussed. I wanted to compose a musical piece that could be easily perceived to have fractal nature, and this is it. My fellow students in Sibelius Academy then assisted me as musicians when I recorded this in year 1996. The name “Kuusi“ is a Finnish word with meanings “six“ and “spruce“, the original version of the piece had six layers, and I thought that the fractal reminds a spruce a bit.
