Hala landed in Toronto on the first Canadian government airlift of Syrian refugees on Dec. 10, 2015: “Because of the war, we couldn’t live [there] anymore. Always bombing, always the threat. Every time you get out of your home, you can get hit by whatever. So we couldn’t live anymore with fear. So we decided to leave Syria. This is a new beginning.
