Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, Slow Fox-Trot from “Roberta” (O. Harbach – J. Kern) – Harry Roy mit seinem Mayfair Hotel Tanz-Orchester & englishem Refraingesang, Odeon 1933 (Recorded in London; German release) NOTE: „Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” is a Jerome Kern’s song presented for the first time on Broadway in 1933, in a musical play „Roberta” which became a great success in the New Amsterdam Theatre (it run for 294 performances). In 1935, the film “Roberta” with Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers and Irene Dunne was released, becoming an international box office smash. The song was sung in the movie by Irene Dunne with a reprise danced by Fred & Ginger. Compared with the Broadway show, two songs were added in the movie: “I Won’t Dance” and “Lovely To Look At” becoming alltogeter the 1930s song evergreens. “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” was often performed in postwar years, including Peggy Lee & Benny Goodman in 1941, Nat King Cole in 1946, Dinah Washingtin in 1956 or the fabulous performance by The Platters in 1958.
