“Go A Little Bit Further“ -- Jordy Smith, Behind the Maps: Where The Road Ends

The thing about any successfully documented surf trip — especially when it’s a score on the level of Maps to Nowhere Ep#4, Where the Road Ends (watch here! ) -- is that you can end up with way more material than can be elegantly crammed into one edit. In this series, Behind the Maps, we’re offering up a little more insight into what went on behind the scenes of each trip. And in the case of Where The Road turned out to be a whole ’nother trip!   Now, we don’t want to say that we got Jordy Smith hooked on going feral after his experience in our Maps to Nowhere project or anything. But not a week after he and Soli Bailey camped out on that remote stretch of coastline for the latest “Where the Road Ends” episode, Jordy went back. Frothing. High on isolation, campfire food, and empty, powerful teepees far from civilization. Indeed, he returned with fellow Saffa Eli Beukes for more, as a promising swell slammed into that zone once again.    “The biggest lesson I might’ve learned this trip has definitely been just to go that little bit further,” recalls Jordy in this mini-episode of “Behind the Maps.” The two certainly did -- and were rewarded for their efforts. *** Note: “Maps to Nowhere” is a series about the lengths surfers will go to surf perfect, empty waves. The spots you’re about to see are not new discoveries — but they are (nearly) perfect, and they are empty. The locations are not disclosed because our belief is that the journey is at least half the fun — and sometimes, over half of the travel time. We thank the many local community members that helped make our adventures a success.
