Throughout the country of Colombia, people continue to protest. What began as a march against a proposed increase to the value-added tax (VAT) has become a protest against the last few years of lockdowns and repression of the working class. Quarantines made it impossible for people to work for six months and after a few months of a “new normal“, long weekend curfews and restrictions have frustrated people completely. Reforms of police and military security forces, improved peaceful negotiations with FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia—People’s Army (Spanish: Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia—Ejército del Pueblo, FARC–EP and FARC) and improved services for health care, pensions and the living wage have become part of the discussion.
