Emma’s View Gouache Landscape Painting Tutorial

I love to paint from photos; it allows me to relax and really slow down and study colors and textures. I paint about half and half realistic landscapes and whimsical landscapes, but all of the technical skill I use for whimsical scenes comes from paintings like this. You’ll find this scene packed with techniques and clever ways to create complex details, it’s the perfect scene for an afternoon painting project! This tutorial is only possible because of the fantastic original photograph taken by Emma Cummings, and her kind permission for us all to have a go at recreating it. Thank you Emma! Happy painting! Ruth ✨ COLORS You’ll need Payne’s gray (or black), titanium white, primary yellow and primary red, ultramarine and cobalt turquoise light. BRUSHES For brushes I use a 1/2“ angled shader, size 8 filbert, size 4 round and size 2 liner. These are the brushes I use for nearly everything, and I only buy the Kingart Original Gold Series brushes- I’ve been using these brushes exclusively for nearly 2 years now and I love them!
