USA: Pentagon apologises for ‘horrible mistake’ after Kabul drone strike civilian deaths

A spokesperson for the Pentagon has described a Kabul drone strike carried out in August by US forces as a ’horrible mistake,’ after an investigation revealed that those killed were not a direct threat to US forces. Spokesperson John Kirby relayed the condolences of General McKenzie, Commander of the US Central Command, to the surviving family members of civilians killed in the attack, during a briefing in Arlington on Friday. Kirby then announced a ’thorough review’ of the recent investigation, which will set out to decide what accountability measures should be taken, and to what extent ’strike authorities, procedures and processes’ should be altered in the future. “Things that I said obviously have not turned out to be correct. But it was done in as good faith an effort as possible, to be as transparent as we could with what we knew at the time.
