The dark side of social media – how can we protect children? | DW Documentary

Violent, antisemitic and pornographic content is being increasingly shared by children. It’s a growing problem in schools, but hardly anyone is willing to talk openly about it. What can be done to protect children and teenagers? We meet a lawyer who teaches children in Germany what is and isn’t allowed online. She says many of them don’t realize that what they’re sharing could be punishable by law, like swastikas and Hitler salutes. In addition, she says, children are becoming increasingly desensitized to shocking images. We also meet a 15-year-old who was investigated by the police for sharing child pornography. He says he did it for ‘shock value,’ and did not realize how morally wrong it was. Schools, meanwhile, are trying to teach students how to use social media responsibly. But it’s an uphill battle, as the internet is constantly flooded with new inappropriate content. ـــــ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Watch top documentaries fro
